Setting the scene for Pharmacy in Respiratory Medicines Optimisation – in the current NHS year

In our opening presentation, Ravijyot Saggu highlighted the opportunities for pharmacy teams to play a leading role in transforming respiratory care despite significant NHS challenges.

Her presentation explored key respiratory developments and upcoming changes in the context of the evolving NHS landscape, and why respiratory medicines optimisation matters in terms of the burden of illness, cost, variation in outcomes and access, and environmental impact.

While recognising ongoing pressures around funding and variation in care, she emphasised the importance of service transformation and improved access as enablers of better outcomes.

Opportunities for system level improvement included a focus on workforce, population health and prevention, patient activation (holistic care, shared decisions and group consult), leveraging digital & AI, alternative models of care & innovation, multi-year planning and building agility & resilience into the system.

Her overall message was clear: pharmacy professionals have a vital role in driving innovation, improving quality and shaping the future of respiratory care across the NHS.
