Say Hello, Wave Goodbye

John Chater, May 2026

Wes Streeting, Health Secretary since the Labour government came to office in July 2024, has resigned from the Cabinet. The resignation is widely considered to be a precursor to him challenging the beleaguered Prime Minister, whose position still looks perilous following recent election results.

Mr Streeting’s replacement as Health Secretary is the Rt Hon James Murray MP, who represents Ealing North in London. Mr Murray previously served as Chief Secretary to the Treasury and was also Deputy Mayor of London for Housing from 2016 to 2019.

He has something of a reputation as a tough and able negotiator, so his tenure as Health Secretary could be interesting, given ongoing industrial action by resident doctors and the challenges of getting the NHS Modernisation Bill through the Houses of Parliament.

Following confirmation that Mr Murray will replace him, Mr Streeting posted his full support on X.
