‘A case of history repeating…’

Very interesting to see that new Health Secretary Wes Streeting had asked Lord Darzi to lead a ‘raw and honest assessment’ of the NHS, to inform a new 10-year plan.

As I recall, Lord Darzi was one of Gordon Brown’s ministerial goats (‘government of all the talents’, not ‘greatest of all time’). In 2008, for the then Labour government, he led a review of the NHS similar in purpose to the one he has been asked to head now.

As a statement of intent, it is an interesting move on the part of Mr Streeting, and it might be worth a peruse of Lord Darzi’s original report to get an idea of where we might be heading. He also reviewed the NHS in London in ‘A Framework for Action’, published in 2007, so certainly has reliable form when it comes to healthcare appraisals.

It’s like the last 14 years never happened…
