A new AI triage tool in the NHS App that directs patients to the most appropriate services, together with widespread access to AI-powered notetaking tools for NHS staff, is expected to help reduce waiting times and improve care. The technologies are being introduced as part of a wider programme to modernise NHS digital services and reduce administrative workloads.
The plans form part of the £10 billion investment in NHS technology, digital and data systems over the next three years, announced by the government last year, and support commitments in the NHS 10 Year Health Plan to make greater use of technology.
The new AI triage tool is being rolled out following a successful trial and is expected to be used by more than 200,000 patients within the next 12 months and available to all NHS App users in England by April 2028.
The tool will help direct patients to the right care, such as a GP appointment, community and other pharmacy services, A&E, community service or self-care advice. It will work by adapting questions depending on responses to get a more detailed view of a patient’s condition.
AI-powered notetaking tools will record conversations between patients and clinicians to produce real-time transcripts and draft clinical summaries, expected to reduce administrative and increase time with patients.
Other plans that are part of the £10 billion technology, digital and data investment include:
Sir Jim Mackey, Chief Executive of NHS England, “The new AI tool in the NHS App will help get patients to the best service for their needs first time – whether that’s a GP appointment, trip to a pharmacy or advice on caring for themselves at home.”
